Commit

A commit is a snapshot of your project at a point in time. This page walks through the basic workflow: initialize a repo, stage files, and make your first commit.

Create local repository

cd <my_project_dir>  # Move to your project directory
ls -la  # see what files are inside
# ls -Force  # For windows powershell

Initialize git repos:

git init  # Initialize git repository
git branch -m main  # Rename default branch to `main` (older Git versions default to `master`)
ls -la  # You will see newly created `.git` directory. This will contain all the version history.
# ls -Force  # For windows powershell

Check status:

git status

Create a file

Create a file train.py

train.py

and check status:

git status

In vscode, it will look like:

Stage

Staging lets you choose exactly which changes to include in your next commit, rather than committing everything at once.

Add file(s) to the staging area:

git status  # Current state of our directory
git add train.py  # Add a single file to the staging area
# OR -> To add all
git add .  # Add everything that isn't "ignored"
git status  # Git shows us what is and is not staged

Remove file(s) from the staged area

Note

After git log, the terminal shows one block per commit (newest first): hash, author, date, then the message indented with four spaces:

If you have several commits, Git prints the same pattern for each. Press q to leave the pager.
